IRS Filing and Payment Deadline FAQs

As part of the Relief for Taxpayers Affected by Coronavirus Pandemic (Notice 2020-18) the IRS has created a frequently asked questions page related to the extended filing and payment deadlines. The questions cover eligibility for the extended filing and payment dates, filing and paying balance due amounts and second estimated payment, contributions to IRAs, HSAs and MSAs and other questions concerning final date to claim a refund on a 2016 original return and the underpayment penalty for 2019 returns.

Here some items to note:

  • Contributions to an IRA for 2019
Taxpayer has until July 15, 2020 to make a 2019 IRA contribution (Question 17).
  • Balance due payment scheduled for April 15
Previously filed 2019 returns with a balance due with the payment scheduled for April 15 will not be automatically rescheduled. Question 14 explains how a taxpayer can cancel the payment and reschedule it if needed.
  • 2020 2nd Quarter Estimated Tax Payment
The second quarter 2020 estimated payment is due on June 15, 2020 for individuals and calendar year C corporations (Question 16)
  • 2019 Underpayment penalty rules
The underpayment penalty rules for the 2019 still apply (Question 24)

To see all of the questions and answers see the Filing and Payment Deadlines Questions and Answers on the IRS website.
